Why Donate Blood?

Every few seconds, someone in India needs blood for surgery, accidents, childbirth complications, or chronic illnesses. One voluntary donation can help save up to three lives. NTF Blood Donor connects healthy donors in Tiruchengode and nearby areas with patients who need blood urgently.

Donating blood is safe, takes less than an hour, and costs you nothing except a little time. Your contribution strengthens the local blood supply and gives families hope during emergencies.

Eligibility

Who Can Donate Blood?

You can usually donate whole blood if you meet the general guidelines below. Final eligibility is confirmed by a doctor or blood bank staff at the camp.

  • Age between 18 and 65 years (first-time donors up to 60 in some camps; repeat donors may donate until 65).
  • Minimum weight of 45 kg.
  • Haemoglobin level of at least 12.5 g/dL (women may be accepted at 12.0 g/dL per camp rules).
  • Normal pulse and blood pressure on the day of donation.
  • Feeling well on the day of donation — no fever, cold, cough, or infection.
  • At least 3 months since your last whole blood donation.
  • Had a full meal and adequate rest before donating.
  • Not pregnant or breastfeeding (for women).

Blood Groups We Need

All blood groups are valuable. O negative is especially important in emergencies because it can be given to patients of any blood group. Whether you are A+, B+, AB+, O+, or Rh negative, hospitals and patients in Tiruchengode need your support.

  • One unit of blood (about 350 ml) is collected per donation.
  • The process is supervised by trained medical staff.
  • Sterile, single-use needles and bags are used for every donor.
  • You receive a short health check before donation.

Temporary & Permanent Deferrals

Some conditions require you to wait before donating, or prevent donation altogether. Always inform camp staff about your health history.

When You Should Wait

Wait until you have fully recovered from fever, flu, sore throat, or infection. Some antibiotics and treatments require a waiting period — staff will advise based on your prescription.
Major surgery, dental extraction with complications, or recent tattoo/piercing (unless done at a licensed facility with sterile equipment) may require deferral for several months.
Travel to certain regions or recent live vaccines may require a short waiting period. Bring your vaccination record if you have one.

Who Cannot Donate

Persons with HIV, hepatitis B or C, certain cancers, heart disease under treatment, uncontrolled diabetes, or other conditions as defined by national blood safety guidelines cannot donate.
Blood banks follow strict screening for high-risk exposure to infections transmitted through blood. Honest answers during the donor questionnaire protect both donors and recipients.
Do not donate if you consumed alcohol in the last 24 hours, are hungover, or have done heavy physical work on an empty stomach. Rest and eat well before coming to the camp.

Before You Donate

Preparation Tips

  • Sleep well the night before and eat a healthy meal within 3 hours of donation.
  • Drink plenty of water or juice before and after donating.
  • Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be rolled up easily.
  • Bring a valid photo ID and any medical documents if you have a specific condition.
  • Avoid fatty foods right before donation — they can affect some screening tests.
  • After donation, rest for 10–15 minutes, have refreshments provided at the camp, and avoid heavy lifting for a few hours.
