Your Guide to Donating Blood

Donating blood is simple when you know what to expect. This page explains when you can donate, where to go in Tiruchengode, what to do before and after donation, and the step-by-step process at the camp.

NTF Blood Donor has been organizing voluntary blood donation since 2019. Follow these guidelines to donate safely and help patients in need.

Timing

When to Donate Blood

You can donate when you are healthy and meet eligibility rules. In general:

  • You are between 18 and 65 years old and weigh at least 45 kg.
  • At least 90 days (3 months) have passed since your last whole blood donation.
  • You feel well today — no fever, cold, cough, sore throat, or active infection.
  • Your haemoglobin is within the camp limit (usually 12.5 g/dL or above).
  • You have eaten a proper meal and are not on an empty stomach.
  • You have not consumed alcohol in the last 24 hours.

Best Time of Day

Most camps run from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Morning or early afternoon is ideal after breakfast. Avoid donating late at night if you are tired.

Special Days & Camps

NTF organizes blood donation camps on occasions such as World Blood Donor Day (14 June) and during local community events. Follow our gallery and social media, or call us for the next camp date in Tiruchengode.

The Donation Process (Step-by-Step)

At the camp, the full visit usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. The blood draw itself takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

1

Registration

Fill in your details, show a valid photo ID, and sign the donor form. Staff will note your blood group if known.

2

Health Questionnaire

Answer questions about your health, medicines, travel, and lifestyle. Be honest — this keeps you and patients safe.

3

Medical Check

A doctor or nurse checks weight, pulse, blood pressure, temperature, and haemoglobin (Hb) with a finger-prick test.

4

Blood Collection

You lie or sit comfortably. A sterile, single-use needle collects about 350 ml of blood into a sealed bag. Staff monitor you throughout.

5

Rest & Refreshments

Rest for 10 to 15 minutes. Drink juice or water and eat a light snack provided at the camp before you leave.

6

Donor Card & Thanks

You may receive a donor card or certificate. Your blood is tested, stored safely, and used for patients who need it.

Prepare

Before Donation — Steps & Conditions

Steps Before You Go

  • Sleep at least 6 to 8 hours the night before.
  • Eat a healthy meal within 3 hours of donation — avoid fasting.
  • Drink 2 to 3 glasses of water or juice before leaving home.
  • Wear loose clothing with sleeves that roll up above the elbow.
  • Bring a valid photo ID (Aadhaar, driving licence, college ID, etc.).
  • List any medicines you take and share them at the camp.
  • Avoid heavy exercise and fatty fried food immediately before donating.

Conditions — Do Not Donate If

  • You have fever, cold, cough, or feel unwell today.
  • You donated whole blood in the last 3 months.
  • You drank alcohol in the last 24 hours.
  • You are pregnant, recently delivered, or breastfeeding (until cleared).
  • You had major surgery, tattoo, or piercing recently (ask staff about waiting period).
  • You have certain chronic illnesses or take medicines that defer donation.

Full eligibility rules are on our Who Can Donate page. The doctor at the camp makes the final decision.

Recovery

After Donating Blood

Immediately After (Same Day)

  • Rest at the camp for at least 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Have the refreshments provided (juice, biscuits, fruit).
  • Drink extra fluids — water, juice, or ORS — for the rest of the day.
  • Keep the bandage on for 4 to 6 hours; avoid scratching the needle site.
  • Do not lift heavy weights or do strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
  • Do not smoke for at least 2 hours after donation.
  • If you feel dizzy, lie down with feet raised and tell camp staff.

Next Few Days

  • Eat iron-rich foods (greens, dates, jaggery, lentils, egg, etc.) if suitable for you.
  • Continue drinking plenty of water — your body replaces fluid within 24 to 48 hours.
  • Red blood cells rebuild over a few weeks; platelets recover sooner.
  • You may donate again after 3 months if you remain healthy and eligible.
  • Contact us or a doctor if you have prolonged dizziness, swelling, or pain at the arm.

Thank you for donating. You have helped save lives in Tiruchengode and beyond.
